We understand that your central heating breaking down can be a big cause of distress. No hot water or heating can be very inconvenient and uncomfortable, especially in winter.

How To: Bleed a radiator
Your radiator can stop working if it has air in it, making your central heating appear broken. To release this air you need to bleed your radiators. To do this:
- Find the valve at the end of the radiator
- Carefully turn the valve, using a radiator key. Stop when you hear the air escaping.
- When the valve starts to drip, tighten and close it
- Check your water pressure
- Repeat on all of your radiators
Lower water pressure is a common problem which see more too often. Low water pressure can cause boilers to function improperly. A reduction in water pressure can be caused by bleeding your radiators, or by a leak in your boiler system.
To check the pressure, you can use the water pressure indicator. This should be located on the front of your boiler or in the airing cupboard located near your cylinder. It could be either displayed digitally or by a dial.
The indicator should read somewhere between 1-2 bars of atmospheric pressure. If it is below this, your boiler needs refilling.
How To: increase water pressure
- Find the cold water feed to your boiler
- Locate the small tap on your cold water feed. Carefully turn this, until your boiler pressure indicator increases to read between one and two.
- When it reads between one and two, close the tap
- Check to see if your boiler has started working
Sometimes these two checks are all that is needed to get your central heating working again.
