Baldock was founded by the Knights Templar (also the name of the town’s secondary school) as a medieval market town in the 1140s.
The main theory of the origin of the name Baldock is as a derivation from the Old French name for Baghdad: Baldac or later Baudac,
which the Templars had been thwarted from conquering during the Crusades

Baldock’s annual charter fair has been going on strong since 1199 which is still held for up to four days from October 2 each year

Baldock became a regional centre for malting in the 16th century and in 1881 there were approximately 30 drinking establishments
in the town of only 1,900 people.

The front of the building that is now Tesco was originally built for a film processing company called Kosmos. It was alsoinspired by Howard Carter’s explorations of Egypt
